2020-08-14 Hot in Port Washington, and cold heading south

We had a nice sail to Port Washington.  Had a couple of thunderstorms with 30 knots, but we had plenty of warning, and dropped sails before it hit.  Charm got a brief fresh water rinse.  We also sailed through a race going on.  Fun to see all the spinnakers flying.

Got into Port Washington, and did not do much for the next couple of days because it is HOT.

We have no air conditioning on the boat, unless we plug into power at a dock.  Just the hatches and ports open, and whatever breeze is blowing is how we cool off.  Being on the water helps as long as there is a breeze.  When that breeze stops you feel it.   Monday only got to a low of 80.  Tuesday was a high of 96, but with humidity felt like 102.   At least Kris is was not curled up in a blanket for those days.  We did make it into the store for groceries, and an early lunch at 10:30, but the rest of the day was too hot to do much of anything.

A little rain late Tuesday helped to cool things off.  Dean even put up the rain catch for that downpour.

Getting wet putting up rain catch system.

Wednesday was a little cooler, so we worked on some projects,  Dean worked on painting our supports for our helm seat.  Our helm seat is looking very tired and dirty - and we can't get it clean.  We had a new helm seat on order, so it was time to spruce up the support post for it.

Worn out looking helm seat and support post.

Working on painting the support post and fittings for helm seat

Kris worked on her kayak, while Dean worked on the helm seat.  The kayak has drain holes, but water also splashes up though those holes which Kris did not like.  So she put some plugs in 4 of the 8 holes and glued them in.   Had to hold the plugs in with something, so yes, upside down bottles of salad dressing and cans of chicken were used.
You use what you can find when doing odd boat projects.

Next day was some clean up, and another project.  We had purchased a gas sensor to put under our propane stove.  Of course little projects can become quite large when you have to take the boat apart to get to where the wiring needs to go.
Getting behind stove and opening wall to run wires.

On Friday we decided to head into town, and see if our new helm seat had arrived.  It had not, but we went ahead and stopped in and got groceries to stock up for the month.
Got back to boat and had lunch, then West Marine (where we had the helm seat on order), let us know that the seat had not even shipped, and it would be a couple more weeks.  We were not waiting that long, so made some quick decisions, and decided the weather looked good to head south, so anchors up quickly, and headed out.

Have taken a lot of photos of buildings and such going though New York, so this time, took pictures of some of the bridges we pass under.

Had to motor a little more than we wanted on the trip south, but did sail about 70% of the trip.  Quite the difference from a few days ago, it was cold.

You know it is cold when Dean puts on sweats - notice still bare feet.

Only 68 inside the boat - BRRR

Kris had to break out the fuzzy warm socks.

Had a nice sunset on the trip

Coast guard ship anchored offshore.

We are now safely anchored in Lewes Delaware, after our 154 mile overnight sail.  It is chilly still, with high temps only in the 80's.   We will head out early in the morning tomorrow up to Chesapeake City.

  1. Wow, hot to cold...not sure which I'd prefer. It's actually been quite pleasant in Oriental over the past few days. But that's abnormal - usually blazing hot this time of year here. Enjoy your trip south and hope you'll swing by Fork Point Rd. for a spell on your way.
