2022-07-30 Back to Newport and Montauk Lake

Left Cuttyhunk anchorage and planned to head to Block Island.  The winds did not cooperate, so instead of Block Island, we went back to Newport.  Had a nice sunrise to start the trip.

Going back to Newport worked out well, as we ended up taking a nice walk up to a shopping center, getting our hair cut, and having a nice lunch out.

Nice looking waterfront home in Newport

You never know if the food is going to be good, but at least it is unique looking

Turns out, unique looking inside as well, and good food at good prices.

We were able to catch a free bus back to the dinghy, so splurged and bought lotto tickets.  Sorry - didn't win.

Later in the day, Dean was talking on his phone, when it just stopped working.

Deans phone, with swollen battery separated the casing.

Guess we should not have bought lotto tickets and saved the money for a new phone.

While in Newport, took our laundry into the maritime center, and did 3 loads of big stuff that is too big or hard to do on the boat.    Mattress pads, blankets and sheets.   Felt good to get that done.  Also worked on some boat cleaning, and started to tackle taking apart the big bean bag, to make some smaller ones for the sling seat.

Had some very foggy mornings.
The sailboat  in the middle you can see is about 100' from us.

The day we left Newport, a big cruise ship pulled in.  Glad we left when we did, as I am sure the anchorage would be rocky with the back and forth of boats shuttling guests to town.

Very large cruise ship.

We left Newport, and planned on sailing to Block Island, but the winds were favorable, so decided to continue on to Lake Montauk, as we had never been there, but have been to Block Island several times.

Montauk is on the NE corner of Long Island.  It is unique as it has a breakwater entrance, even though it is accessed from Long Island Sound.  Lake Montauk is a rather large lake (salt water), which provides a very calm anchorage.

Quite a few fishing vessels docked just inside Lake Montauk

We had read that there were some good trails nearby, so we went for about a 4 mile walk.

Nicely maintained trails

Tree branch just perfect for a rest.

Trail led to a very rocky beach

Took a different way back, found a very well built rock wall, complete with rock opening for rain run off.

Did not know we were on a private road until we got to the fence, and had to climb over.

They should have put a sign on the road at the beach as well.  Did not know it was private until we were at the end.

Took the time at Montauk to finish the bean bag project.  Took the big bean bag apart and made two smaller ones that fit the sling seat better.   They were a pain to sew.

Two smaller bags to lean against.

Nice sunset on Montauk Lake.

We will head out today to Sag Harbor.

  1. Looks like you are having a wonderful time. The bean bags look comfy. I expect to see lots more "Dean in Repose" portraits....

  2. You most likely will, as it is one of his favorite positions
