Tropical Storm Elsa, 10 mile walk

We left Bridgeport and motored over to the town of Stratford.  We had anchored there back in What If, but the weather was different enough this time, that the anchorage was not that pleasant if there was any wind at all.  The current through the river was quite strong, and the wind was opposite, so we "sailed" at anchor, with the wind coming from the stern, and the current from the bow, swinging through a 90 degree arc, and pulling hard on our anchor chain, which was running under the boat.

We were going to spend a few days, but decided with Tropical Storm Elsa coming, that the anchorage would not be safe, so we sailed south to Port Jefferson Harbor and anchored near Old Field Point Beach.

It was a great spot, scenic, not busy and calm.   Tropical Storm Elsa was projected to hit on Friday morning, and bring up to 20 knots of wind, and lots of rain.    Well, we got rain, but also had 40 knots of wind as well, so much windier than projected.  Boat did fine, and we rode it out with no issues.

By 1:00 that day the wind was down to 5 knots and the sun came out.

The next day we walked up to Stop and Shop, and Ace hardware for some bolts, and on the way back stopped at SE Port Deli.   Wow, quite the sandwiches, quite good.  Would recommend them to anyone passing by.

Back on the boat, we started a project.  On our ports, there are dogs, to hold the ports closed.  Some had broken.  They were spot welded on, so we could only fix by drilling a hole and putting in a bolt to hold them.   The issue came about that our standard drill with a 90 degree attachment would not fit into the port opening in order to drill the hole.     No problem - we just walked 5.1 miles to Home Depot, bought a new small 90 degree drill, and walked the 5.1 miles back.  Of course we stopped and got sandwiches again at SE Port Deli.   YUMMMY.

Port dogs are the black knobs

We left Port Jefferson, intending to sail to an anchorage called the Thimbles.  We made it across the sound, but the wind was on the nose to the Thimbles, and it was rough and cloudy, so stopped early at New Haven, and will probably motor the rest of the way tomorrow, as wind will be light for a week or so.
