For those of you who don’t know us, we set
sail on a 1968 Cascade 36 Monohull Sailboat in 1993. Sailed from Washington state down the west coast
and up into the Sea of Cortez. This is when
we were young, (somewhat stupid) and recently married.
It was a great trip and we learned a lot. Our faithful vessel
Honalee, taught us much, and in 1995 we shipped her back to Washington and sold
her to new owners, and started working again, with the plan to now start a
family, and if everything worked out well, to take our child or children as the
fates may decree, and go cruising again.
Honalee, ready to set out |
Jump forward to 2011.
Lots of time working and saving money, and now our son is 11 years old,
and the time is right. Sell the house,
all possessions and purchase a 1994 Manta 38 Catamaran. This is a huge step up from our 36’ monohull,
but we are a family of three now, well 5 if you count the Alaskan Malamute
(Oso), and Border Collie mix (Sam), that are coming along. 2011 to 2014 we cruised the East coast of the
United States, Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean.
Perfect age for our son to be home schooled, and live on a boat. Old enough to have some responsibility, and
remember a lot of the trip, but young enough that he was still pleasant to be
with, and actually enjoyed time with his parents. In 2014 he decided that High School ought to
be on land, and money was getting tight, so sell the boat (It is still cruising
with her owners), buy a minivan, drive cross country and settle in the high
desert of Boise, Idaho.
What If under sail |
Jump forward again to 2019 – 3rd time. We all know that 3rd time is a
Charm, so what better to name our 1995 42’ Manta Catamaran. Yes, we liked the 38’ Manta enough that we
bought the same boat, but newer. Newer
models add added length in bow, and stern.
Our son is in college, moving out, we are ready to stop working again. Boat is on the hard now in Hayes, VA. We have done some work to her already, but will have more to do. Official retirement date is March 2021, at which time we sell the house and possessions and will drive cross country again with same minivan, to move onto “Charm”, and set sail.
