2023-03-12 Hanging out, waiting for watermaker parts, swirly winds

We have been having a week of swirly winds.  First they are south, then west, then north, then east - you get the picture.

That means our travel is dictated by the winds, and were anchoring protection can be found - which is always the case, but this last week more so as normally we have a week or so of  winds from the same direction (trade winds), but this last week is more like a day from the same direction.

We spent a couple of days at the south end of Big Farmers Cay.  Just hanging out and had a nice beach walk, and spent a couple hours visiting with Ross and Phyliss on Kohina who have a 41' Maine Cat.

Nice beach, with small mangrove river

Lots of turtles in the shallows off the beach.  Charm in background

After Big Majors, we headed a bit north and anchored at White Point, on Great Guana Cay.   Another nice beach.   Just relaxed on boat, went for daily walks,  Not much going on.

Large termite nest.

Charm in the anchorage - beautiful water again

Found large osprey nest.  Abandoned now, with shrub growing in the middle of it.

Had some fun with smooth roundish rocks on beach

Had these two little squid? hang out by our anchor bridle for the entire time we were anchored here.

Pretty sure they are small squid - could be baby cuttlefish?

Saw this nice ray in the shallows while kayaking into the beach

Never know what you will see when you go for a walk.  This was woven out of polypropylene rope.  No idea why it was hanging in the tree.

Nice tide pool full of colorful shells with critters inside. Fun watching them crawl around

No idea what this was - still soft but high and dry on the rocks.

This odd looking item was solid, and firmly attached to the rock. No idea what it used to be, or if just weird rock - let us know if you have ideas.

After a couple of days it was time to test the water maker - if it ran, that gave us options on where to go next, but if it did not, then we would have to stop somewhere we could get water.   Fortunately the last fix worked and we had a working water maker - Yeah!     So we decided to move just a few miles north  for better protection from a north swell to Little Bay.    Nice and flat again.  We decided to walk the two miles into Black Point for lunch.

Had a nice lunch, and Kris made a little friend at Lorraine's Restaurant.   Had sliders, and Kris ate both,  but our little friend ate at least half the meat of one, and a couple of fries as well.

I smell food - Hey lady - want to share?

After Little Bay we moved north.  More boats as we head past Staniel Cay.  Lots more larger boats.

Yes, that is a helicopter on the stern of the boat.

We moved to the Pipe Creek area and anchored near Thomas Cay.   Our friends Jason and Monica off of Breathe - a Manta 40 are here as well.

Went for a nice dinghy explore of some sandbars along with Julie and Aaron from Turnerbout, friends of Breathe.
Jason and Monica from Breathe

Jason and Dean having a nice swing on a swing set built on a sandbar surrounded by water.

Found several small conch in the shallows.  We moved them to deeper water, as the tide was going out, and they would have been high and dry before they could have crawled to deeper water.

Saw this guy while dinghying around checking out the anchorage area.

Beautiful moon rise

Next day we decided to go for a walk with Turnerbout and Jason - Monica had to work.

Found a trail - led through this soft sandy mud area.  Dean and I took that path, and sunk into the mud quite a bit.   Had to take our flip flops off, as we could not pull them out.  Walking barefoot though the muck was not fun.  Jason sunk in and had to do the same.   He and Turnerbout were smarter and found a nice alternate path.

Views and beach from other side were worth the icky walk, but glad there is a better path for the way back.

Top of the hill

Enjoying the sunshine, from a nice perch

We will stay here for a few more days, hopefully go for snorkel.

Happy Day Light Savings Day

  1. Glad the water-maker issue is at least temporarily solved!! Looks like you have found some interesting spots to explore. We're going to wait out one last "swirl" in winds down here then head north ourselves.
