2022-05-29 What's in the frig?, Projects Projects

We are staying at our friends dock, and since this is such a  treat to have water and power, and a place ship items, we are taking advantage, and trying to order as many things as we need, and do projects.  We came back with a list of items to work on, or purchase.  A list of about 150 items.   Some are simple, like order some spare 3 amp fuses.  Some are more complex, like haul the boat and put on new bottom paint.

One of our first projects to tackle was the refrigerator.  Since our friends at the dock had a somewhat empty fridge we could use to store our cold stuff in.

Every now and then we would see some brownish water/ice building at the forward inboard side of the frig, the side by the freezer.

Icky brown in fridge - no one wants to see that with their food.

We took the top plate off the wall between the frig and freezer and saw dark colored wood, not good.  After removing the white melamine on the frig side we could see the 1/8" plywood was sopping wet and had that lovely mold color.  A good 3/4 of the plywood was wet and easily removed.  After the plywood was removed we could see even the closed cell foam had mold spots.  So Kris treated all of the mold with bleach and we put a small space heater in the area as well.  Figured over time the humidity and dew was able to work its way into the plywood so didn't want to just put more wood back in.

Divider between refrigerator and freezer.  Dark is water/mold filled wood, with foam in between.

Rotten wood removed from fridge side, you can see some black mold on foam.

Kris really got into making sure the frig was mold free.

It helps to be flexible when doing boat projects.

Had good luck finding 1/4" starboard, a high density HDPE plastic, here in Oriental NC.  Used 3M 4200 to bond the starboard to the foam and then used silicon sealant to seal around all the edges.  Had to use odds and ends to brace the starboard to the foam.  Waited the 24 hours for the sealant to cure before we could turn the cold back on. In the end we were without a frig/freezer for 4 days but now we should have no more brown water in the frig.

Fridge back in operation.  Now need to fill with food.

We have also been working on replacing some wires.  We did a "best we could with tools we had" crimp job on some large 4/0 wire, that did not function as well as we wanted, and loosened with time causing a voltage drop that affected our electronics.  So old wire out, and new in.  Of course, it meant a new $60 heavy duty crimper.

New crimper and old bad wiring.

It always looks like such a mess while working

We have also worked on our winch, replacing the chain wheel, which was worn out, and also too large for the chain.   Our upper and lower seals needed to be replaces so added new oil as well.  Have to take the windlass completely apart to add the oil, and this was actually our third time for this windlass - so -- Third times a Charm!

The boat gets in such a mess while working on projects.

Rest of week looks like nice weather, and we have more projects, and shipments coming in.
