Wanabe Cruiser

We anchored the other day and settled down in the cockpit to relax and take it easy.  As we were looking out onto the anchorage we noticed something swimming towards the boat.  Being brave souls we took a couple steps down the rear steps to identify what was in the water.  It didn't take long for both of us to be back up the steps because we recognized it was a snake swimming towards us.

We each grabbed an extendable boat hook and went back down the steps.  Slapping the water in front of the snake to "scare" it away didn't seem to make a difference to the snake.  Finally we hooked it with the boat hook and tossed it away from the boat, a good 40 feet.  That didn't phase the snake either it came back and even after 5 to 6 tosses it just would not give up.  We finally convinced the snake that it should seek another hunting area and it floated away.

Pick and then fling

After the snake floated away, we got onto the internet and determined that it was  a water moccasin.  A venomous snake common in North Carolina.
We are glad we did not allow it to come on board.

  2. It was a thought, but too late at night to move. Next morning found us poking all hidey holes outside with a boat pole to make sure we did not have a guest arrive in the night.
