Scotty I need more power

Well that is what Captain Kirk always said on Star Trek to his engineering chief Scotty Montgomery.  Some how it always seemed that Scotty could work miracles and give more power and make all the repairs in 1/2 the time it would take normal people.  Not sure how he did it but week after week he did.
One of the things we take for granted today is power.  You are able to plug in just about any electrical equipment at any time and it will work.  Doesn't matter if it night or day the power at your outlet is always there and it seems like you can have everything you want plugged in with out an issue.  The electrical company is able to provide reliable power and all you have to do is at the end of the month pay the bill for what you have used.
On the boat you are the electrical company.  You need to understand the amount of power that is consumed and then how are you going to replenish it.  You can use monitors to tell your daily usage or can list out all your equipment, list their amp draw and time they are on.  This needs to be done for when you are sitting at anchor and also when you are sailing.  There is a limited amount of power available in your battery bank at anyone time.  You can look at some of the high usage items and try to reduce their draw, LED lights have made a big reduction on the power needed for lights.  Some items like computers take a lot so you either do not use them or figure out a way to generate more power.
It all starts with your battery banks and how many amp hours you are able to store and use.  Some battery types allow only 50% usage, lead acid.  Other types like lithium will allow a greater draw, 80% to 90%.  Then you compare space, weight and cost and you come up with no clear winner.  If  your battery bank is 300 amp hours and your demand daily is 150 amp hours then you know you have to generate 150 amp hours each day to replenish your power.  The generation can come from a generator, solar, wind, or combinations of these.  Simple math

Now do you have enough space for solar panels and get enough sun light to generate your demand?  Wind power is nice but again does the wind blow enough to give you all the power you need.  A nice thing about wind is it will generate 24 hours a day where solar is only a 10 hour generator.  Many boat will have a separate engine, generator, that will run daily for an hour to make up the power usage.  The generator comes with the noise and diesel usage.  Like most of the decisions there are several options an no 1 clear winner for all options.

It would all be easier if Scotty was aboard because he would make it all work with  dilithium crystals and he would give us all power we needed.
