Both of us have engineering backgrounds and we have always been very aware of accumulating stuff. The saying "if you have the space you will fill it" and or "inventory is evil" has always been something we talk about and try and make sure we do not do. This is in the work life as well as in the home life. Many people would find our home decorated sparsely, if they thought it was decorated at all. We are one of those people with a three car garage, with three cars that park inside it at all times.
Recently we started to do some "reducing" of our stuff. It is driven more by having to some remodeling in a room than anything else. That room we used as a storage room and since we had to clean it out to do the project it motivated us to start the cleaning. Half the items stored were from Derek's dorm room in college, refrigerator, microwave, bins, etc. Some bins with Christmas and Halloween decor, and then mostly tools and supplies used for remodeling. We had a group of things we need to keep for the house, things we need to use for the next 9 months and then things that could be packed for the boat. There are many things we will continue to use now and take with us on the boat.
As we start to go through the items that are staying with the house we are trying to make sure it is clear to anyone what they are. All the owners manuals are in 1 area, the paint cans are labeled to which room they were used, tools in bins and labeled as well. We sorted and started to get rid of of items people tend to keep for "just in case" you might use it. As our remodeling is drawing to a close, those things are being disposed of. As you can see we are a bit detailed :).
What we are taking to the boat we are labeling the outside of the bins so we will know at a look what bin we need to search. Until we get to the boat and start storing items, we don't know if the bins are the right ones or not, but its a start.
items that we are selling now:
Cabinets from the remodeled bathrooms
Security Camera for the house
Kris's old golf clubs | |
Dean's old desk | |
Satellite phone from the boat
Old computer from when we got back on What If |
To say that we are a bit excited and want to be on the boat soon would be an understatement. However we do have projects here at the house that we need to complete and it still is 9 more months (but who is counting). We don't have much more we can get rid of early, otherwise the house will look empty, and not stages well for selling. We have our running time countdown on our home page under the schedule tab if you are interested on many days left until boat time.
